Purchasing the final baby christening gifts can regularly present more of a challenge than you’d expect. Though there are a wide selection of wonderful gifts on offer, it can be tough to find something that’s really special and unique as the standard rattles, bedding and baby-grows are tough to avoid. As finding real presents with presence can be so hard, many individuals are attempting to create their own cutting edge gifts and personalise presents imaginatively. With so many options for customising and personalisation, it is currently increasingly simple to form the perfect present for the newly born. Below is a listing of 5 wonderful baby christening gifts which are certain to be presents that’ll be valued. One of the most fail-safe and yet amazing baby christening gifts is that of the photo present.

Memolios™ are a fantastic new kind of album you can create using a brand new web-to-print application. Compact and durable, water resistant and impossible to tear, these albums are designed to be handled!

Make an album of your special moments, for yourself, friends, family or business. They are a great give-away. You can use them to capture and share personal events, for promotion of your work (we like to call this a promolio™), or showcase your creativity to the world. The possibilities are endless.

Often silver photograph frames are given for pictures of the newly born and the proud parents. These are nice ideas but frequently many are given and all are awfully similar. But there is something really different you can give a memolio. Beautiful pictures which you can take with you like your rosary.

To set yours aside from the rest, you may have a pleasant frame – or possibly a multi-photo frame – engraved with a special individualized message from within. Likewise , an engraved photograph album could be a great souvenir as it becomes full of footage of the new baby as it grows up. For a great christening present, an already-filled photograph album with pictures of relations, special buildings and family chums is ideal for actually capturing the time for both father and mother and child. For a peculiar and special christening present, different presents such as adopting a wild animal, giving money to an important charity on behalf of the baby or giving money to a baby of the same age in a different country are wonderful concepts.

These humanitarian presents are a good way of giving something back and making sure you give a fairly special present. Some of us have also named stars for their family and friends, made a rose for the receiver or maybe had trees planted in honour of the baby. Many folks are also now giving long-term presents which are presents more for the kid as they grow up versus for the kid as a baby. As an example, a bottle of wine made from the year of birth is a preferred present as it’ll have matured by their eighteenth birthday when they can drink it. Engraved wine glasses are also preferred, as are customized pens. In a similar fashion , engraved jewellery in an adult size is a great present that they can admire as they grow till they’re the right age to wear it. Boys are usually given individualized watches or cufflinks and for girls, pendant necklaces or an engraved band are favored choices.

An enjoyable and practical personalized present idea is that of a customized calendar. Making your own calendar with family stills, critical dates and private messages is a very unique present and a good way to jazz up the nursery with something truly special. It’s also practicable for the new mummy and pa as they can chart measurements and events and use it to recollect baby-related appointments. You may also have clothing or nursery accessories such as clocks, bauble boxes or money boxes personalized so the baby has a practical item to be used but also something lovable they can keep as a souvenir in later life. It’s also now starting to become well-liked to buy presents that are essentially more for the new proud elders than for the baby.

Suited to a larger budget, many friends and relations are purchasing elders an experience day getaway so they can be spoiled and preened and luxuriate in a bit of time for themselves.

This is a great present as it not only gives the elders a well-deserved break and some time alone, but it’s also flexible as they can choose when they organize it for. Other experience days like family portrait experiences are also great, permitting the folks to capture some of their baby’s first moments and the excitement of having a new member of the family.

For chums and relations on a smaller budget, a cosseting present set with bath salts, indulgent foods and a great DVD could be a great home made present, particularly if mixed with the offer of a little bit of babysitting so the new mothers and fathers can enjoy a little bit of time together.

With the option for personalising so many items from multi-photo photograph frames to crystal bubbly flutes and with so many leading edge and imaginative presents on offer, as this top five list shows, it doesn’t need to be too tricky to find unique baby christening gifts with presence.

Generally speaking, a house whose front faces southeast is best adapted for the American type of home landscape. A more detailed discussion of this subject, will appear in a succeeding chapter.

Surroundings

Just as individuals are apt to reflect the habits and characteristics of their environment, landscape design should to some extent conform to the standards set by the surrounding area. This statement holds true only if the general surroundings happen to be pleasant. If, however, the land adjoining or close by to yours happens to be an eyesore, your landscape plan will emphasize seclusion and try to block off the undesirable view.

Soil

Your choice of design and of plants will also be controlled by the soil. For our purposes the two most important types of soil are (a) acid ( sour) and (b) alkaline ( sweet). The easiest thing to do is to work only with those plants that are best suited for your particular soil. However, some plants are so attractive and so well suited to home landscaping that you will feel it is worthwhile to change the type of soil in a part of the property to accommodate them. In fact, this practice is so common today that it is all but taken for granted.

You must also consider whether your soil is wet or dry. Poorly drained, wet soil is among the worst calamities that can befall any home gardener; stagnant water renders soil all but useless. Other wet soils produce good results because they have excellent aeration.

At the opposite end of the scale are the very dry soils ranging all the way to desert conditions. Here, of course, the list of plants that can be used is severely limited. Fortunately, the characteristic architecture of homes in arid regions is also limited and the plants that are in keeping with the climate and soil conditions also go well with the architecture. So, it is important for them to know all the great indoor plants.

Just as acid soil can be made alkaline, and vice versa, we have worked out ways to handle certain natural forces so that they are not too damaging to our efforts to beautify the landscape. The home gardener in Texas, for example, knows that their main problem is to sustain landscape plants successfully through the hot, dry season. To do this they apply a mulch which keeps the soil cooler and conserves its moisture for a longer period. As a result of such practices, there are in the nation’s hot, dry sections beautiful home landscapes that “defy” nature.

Unfortunately, habit and tradition prevent most people who live in crowded urban and suburban areas from taking advantage of undoubtedly distress his more conventional neighbors. Nevertheless, such a rugged individualist would certainly make the interior of his home more comfortable and would also be able to use the garden area to better advantage. A few modern builders, however, have tried to improve orientation in a number of their large developments.

Rural

In rural areas, however, homes are farther apart and an owner need never think twice about orienting his house so as to take advantage of the surrounding elements.

Whether or not the house is parallel to the highway is hardly noticeable under such conditions, so the point should certainly be discussed with the architect or builder.

Ideal Orientation

Generally speaking, the ideal exposure is for the front of the house to face southeast or south . This permits a wider selection of plants to be used in front of the home where it is important to present a pleasant picture to the public, and it puts the more shaded part of the house toward the rear of the property where terraces, patios, porches, and service areas are usually found. In these locations fewer plants are required, so that heavy shade there, would not seriously interfere with the selection of plants.

Also, it makes it possible to take advantage of the shade cast by the house itself on hot summer afternoons. The need for large trees to supply shade would not be so great, and this would mean better gardening because more sunshine would fall on the ground. In addition, trees could then be planted in places where they would complete a satisfactory landscape picture instead of in places where they would cast the most shade on a porch or patio.

Microclimates

By taking advantage of orientation possibilities you can do much to bring under your control some of the “microclimates” of your property. Microclimates are little areas that exhibit some particular type of weather, such as a cool corner, or a hot side of a house, or a wind-swept spot on your lot. Each of them, although a part of the large air masses that make up the climate of the locality, differs from others only 5 or 10 feet away. By properly orienting the house, and properly locating plant material, you can control to some extent these small bits of climate.

For example, the rear wall of the author’s home faces directly south. The two bedrooms are on that side. No shade is cast upon the roof or the south side of the house during hot summer afternoons, and large trees to make such shade would be undesirable

Nevertheless, the south wall of the house should be kept cool in summer so as to reduce the temperatures inside the house and permit comfortable sleeping. To control somewhat the climate on the rear wall of our house, we propose to construct a pergola along the entire back wall so that it projects for about six feet out from the house, and to plant two wisteria vines or variegated ginger to grow over it. Being deciduous plants, they will shade the walls in the summer and yet in winter allow the sun to come through and help warm that side of the house.

This is a perfect example of overcoming, at least partly, poor orientation by employing climate-control practices in a small way. The house wall will be shaded while the remainder of the backyard will be flooded with sunlight and we will be able to grow almost any kind of plants we desire.

Desirable Features

Whether you intend to move to a rural or to an urban area, there are certain qualities you will want your property to have. You want soil with good drainage, and land contour that can be graded without too great expense. The best type of property in these respects would be one that is gently rolling; it offers little likelihood of poor drainage, yet is not sloped enough to cause erosion. A perfectly flat piece of land can appear to be ideal for a garden, but you should first check the subsoil condition to make sure there is no “hard pan” (that is, a layer of hard-packed soil impervious to the passage of water), or even solid rock, just a few inches below the surface.

If you are considering buying an older home with an established planting, do not fail to consider the cost of replacing overgrown or unattractive shrubbery when figuring estimates of any contemplated remodeling. Correcting the landscaping mistakes of previous owners can be a costly and strenuous job.

Custom Building

The person who owns his piece of land but has not yet started to build his home is, of course, in the best position of all to plan his landscape. In that case, one of the most important decisions that can be made concerns the location of the house on the lot. It is never wise to place it in the exact center of the land area. Not only does this make the land look smaller, it also cuts the efficient use of the remainder of the property.

Where a property is less than 150 feet deep, it is wise to squeeze the home as close to the street line as possible. This allows more room in the rear of the house for development of the private and service areas of the garden, as will be explained in detail later on. One piece of good fortune enjoyed by the custom builder is that he can conserve both money and soil by judicious location of the driveway and walk. He has the added opportunity to locate his house in relation to valuable existing trees on the site.

The Pre-Built Home

It is not, however, impossible to find many or most of the desirable features of garden design in an older home, or one already put up by a builder. Besides the advantage of lower initial cost, you may also find a home where terracing, old trees, mature bushes for privacy and you can put hearty house plants, have all been incorporated. Although you are then deprived of the pleasure of making your own individual basic design, you will perhaps find equal enjoyment and certainly much less work in devising modifications of what is already there.

As a gardener, therefore, you will look for a pre-built house that is already well landscaped. Or, failing that, you will look for one whose garden you can transform without the arduous task of uprooting most of the existing vegetation.

Fall color of shrubs and trees is Nature’s cue for us to begin fall planting, since they have begun to close their factories and will soon be practically dormant. No need to delay planting until all the leaves have fallen. In fact, careful, early October planting of trees and shrubs in full leaf is usually very satisfactory. Handle the plants as quickly as possible and keep well watered after planting. Warm soil with plenty of moisture makes a favorable condition for the production of new roots before winter sets in. Plants which have thus become well established in the fall are certainly ahead of those which are planted the following spring. Now is a good time to select those with bright, attractive fall colors.

If you are contemplating planting a mandevilla vine plant or shrubbery border this fall, examine the soil first. If it is a heavy clay that has been excavated for the basement and then packed down by the grading caterpillar, perhaps the planting of mandevilla vine plant should be postponed until spring. Spade the bed now and leave it in a rough condition in order that Jack Frost can do his highly specialized job of breaking up this heavy clay soil during the winter months. In fact Old Jack is just about the only one who can prepare these brick-like soils for shrubbery planting. Add some rotted manure in the spring, level the bed and plant the shrubs.

Many hardy perennial flowers can still be successfully transplanted – but the sooner the, better in order that they may be able to make a few new roots, become settled in their new homes, and can better withstand destructive heaving action resulting from the combined forces of Jack Frost and Old Sol. Small seedlings or rooted cuttings are usually best wintered over in a coldframe and transplanted in the spring. Peonies, irises, hollyhocks, oriental poppies, balloon flowers, phlox, bleeding hearts and madonna lilies top the list for fall transplanting.

A flowering shrub costs less than an evergreen, and in my opinion can achieve equally marvelous effects.

False Cost Estimates

Once you have studied the techniques of landscaping you will be able to guard against making false cost estimates. Here is a typical example of how many people go wrong: The novice would be “professional” home landscaper says to himself, “The distance across the front of my house is 40 feet – the ten plants to plant there cost me $75. Therefore, to go all around my property would cover 300 feet and this would cost approximately $550 plus dollars.” He shakes his head and resigns himself to a half-planted garden.

You will soon learn that such a method of estimating costs is inaccurate. In the first place you must try not to enclose the entire property; secondly, plants in the back yard will be given much more space in which to develop; finally, the plants in the back yard for the most part will be or should be deciduous.

Thus, a fine planting for your entire landscape even including a generous allotment of trees need not cost $550.

Installment Planting

If your budget cannot stand a large initial expense, there is no reason why you cannot spread costs over several years by installment planting, that is, setting only as many shrubs and plants as you can afford each year.

Because you will have made an overall plan, you need not worry that this gradual approach will result in a haphazard garden. As long as as you adhere to your sketches and plans you will eventually have a beautifully landscaped house and garden.

Be Original

Study of landscaping principles makes it easy to avoid imitation. You will arrive at your own firmly grounded convictions, and will be able to judge features common in your neighborhood on their merits, not on their popularity. Some you will like and incorporate into your garden. Others will seem pointless and you will ignore them without hesitation. You will, then, discover (a) that traditional methods are often obsolete, and (b) a different and less expensive garden will in the long run be better suited to your family’s needs.

Therefore, you should eliminate any ideas you have like planting croton red mammey and about how a garden should be designed. Then, as you go through the planning process, you will find that some of your ideas were good and should be included. Others will seem wrong; they will most often stem from what everybody else has in their garden like having croton red mammey. Forget these erroneous ideas; be original. Substitute new ideas you have gleaned from the reading, visiting other gardens – even public gardens and look at new commercial landscape projects. In a few years your house will be a stand-out in your neighborhood. In fact, you will soon realize, as I have many times seen, that your neighbors are beginning to copy you.

People do not copy failures, so you must be a success.

Have you ever thought about getting into hydroponic indoor gardening as a hobby or money making scheme?

Here is a list of advantages of hydroponic indoor gardening when compared to traditional soil based gardening:

1. Once you have made your initial set-up costs, hydroponic gardening is around 20% less expensive to run.

2. You can fit more hydroponic plants in a smaller area. This is despite the plants actually growing larger in most cases, the roots do not grow as big as they don’t need to!

3. Maintenance time is greatly reduced! Weeding doesn’t exist hydroponically and there is no need to water them! All you’ll ever need to do is pick your crop once they are ready.

4. The yield is year round and permanent as you have full control over growing conditions and you will have made them optimum for whatever you are growing. This is great for when it’s off season as you can sell them for higher prices.

5. You can grow your hydroponic indoor gardening plants anywhere; rooftop, window ledge, corridor, garage, bedroom, living room, cellar or attic.

6. Your hydroponic indoor gardening will result in a crop that is on average 40% larger. This is because you have created the ideal environment for them and they have constant access to nutrients.

7. As you will not be watering them, there is no danger of them being over or under watered. This is a common mistake with many novice gardeners.

8. For the reasons listed above, your plants will grow up to 50% faster! This is ideal if you’re feeding a large family or are planning on making money out of it.

9. As you’re not using soil, you can take part in hydroponic indoor gardening in the desert or Antarctica! Or more realistically, if you don’t have a garden, if you live in a high rise building for example.

Apparently, we can see how nature is treated these days. It is a sad thing to know that people do not pay attention so much anymore to the environmental problems. What can we do about this?

It’s as simple as starting with the children. It is good to see the children’s involvement with environment-friendly activities. One such nature-loving activity that children could easily get their hands on is gardening. Why should you consider gardening for your children?

Here are the benefits that gardening could easily provide the children with:

1. Science

In planting, children are indirectly taught the wonders of science like the plant’s life cycle and how human’s intervention can break or make the environment. They can have a firsthand experience on the miracle of life through a seed. This would definitely be a new and enjoyable experience for the kids.

2. Life

Watching a seed grow into a tree is just as wondrous as the conception to birth and growth of a child. In time, kids will learn to love their plants and appreciate the life in them. Gardening could actually help simulate how life should be treated — it should be with care.

The necessities to live will be emphasized to kids with the help of gardening – water, sunlight, air, soil. Those necessities could easily be corresponded to human necessities, i.e., water, shelter, air, food. By simply weeding out, one could educate how bad influences should be avoided to be able to live life smoothly.

3. Relaxation

Studies show that gardening can reduce stress because of its calming effect. This is applicable to any age group. More so, it stimulates all the five senses. Believe it or not, gardening may be used as therapy to children who have been abused or those who are members of broken homes. It helps build one’s self-esteem.

4. Quality Time with the Family

You can forget about your stressful work life for a while be soothed by the lovely ambience in the garden. You can play and spend quality time with your children. You can talk while watering the plants or you can work quietly beside each other.

The bottom line is, always do what you have to do, together with your kids. You might discover a lot of new things about your child while mingling with them in your garden.

Let kids become aware of their environment’s needs. And one way to jumpstart that environmental education may be through gardening. It’s hitting two birds with one stone — teach them to respect life while you bond with them.

Knowing how to care for your flower garden can make a big difference in the look and over-all health of your plants. Here are some simple hints to make your garden bloom with health

1. The essentials must always be given major consideration.

Your flower garden must have an adequate supply of water, sunlight, and fertile soil. Any lack of these basic necessities will greatly affect the health of plants. Water the flower garden more frequently during dry spells.

When planting bulbs, make sure they go at the correct depth. When planting out shrubs and perennials, make sure that you don’t heap soil or mulch up around the stem. If you do, water will drain off instead of sinking in, and the stem could develop rot through overheating.

2. Mix and match perennials with annuals.

Perennial flower bulbs need not to be replanted since they grow and bloom for several years while annuals grow and bloom for only one season. Mixing a few perennials with annuals ensures that you will always have blooms coming on.

3. Deadhead to encourage more blossoms.

Deadheading is simply snipping off the flower head after it wilts. This will make the plant produce more flowers. Just make sure that you don’t discard the deadhead on the garden or mildew and other plant disease will attack your plants.

4. Know the good from the bad bugs.

Most garden insects do more good than harm. Butterflies, beetles and bees are known pollinators. They fertilize plants through unintentional transfer of pollen from one plant to another. 80% of flowering plants rely on insects for survival.

Sowbugs and dung beetles together with fungi, bacteria and other microorganisms are necessary to help in the decomposition of dead plant material, thus enriching the soil and making more nutrients available to growing plants.

Other insects like lacewings and dragonflies are natural predators of those insects that do the real damage, like aphis.

An occasional application of liquid fertilizer when plants are flowering will keep them blooming for longer.

Always prune any dead or damaged branches. Fuchsias are particularly prone to snapping when you brush against them. The broken branch can be potted up to give you a new plant, so it won’t be wasted.

September finally arrives after a normal hot, dry August when we did not care much whether school kept or not. But now September is as welcome as April in the spring.

Showers, cool nights, shorter days and reviving nature get under the gardener’s skin. Digging, dividing, planting, weeding – all become less of a drudgery and more of a pleasure. With a hitch in our belts and new faith in our hearts we plan and work for those things which we know are so vital to the success of next year’s gardens.

Peonies are America’s favorite perennial flowers. They were the cherished “pineys” in our grandmothers’ gardens and have marched along for many years with increasing popularity. Scientifically, they are called “Paeonia” in honor of the mythical Dr. Paeon, who according to legend, used their roots to heal the wounds of Pluto.

The popularity of the peony is well justified because of its stellar qualities. Its extreme hardy character is proven by its ability to sleep through severe winters with temperatures as low as 50 degrees below zero, and then awaken in the spring uninjured.

Dependability is also one of the peony’s major characteristics and also the chicken gizzard plant. Unfailing bloom year after year is certainly a great asset to any flower. Just like my chicken gizzard plant. Records show that some specimen plants more than 150 years old have not failed a single year to flower during that period. Excessively cold, rainy, spring seasons, of course, are not favorable for the production of fine blooms. Sometimes the buds far advanced by unseasonably warm early spring weather are damaged by late freezes.

By making a careful selection of varieties, the bloom period can be extended for about six weeks and longer if singles and tree peonies are included. The colors range from white through various shades of pink to deep red. There are also yellows marked with shades of red and some pure sulfur yellows. The flower types vary from dainty, single ones to those which are fully double. Most of the varieties have sturdy stems and make good cut flowers. The peony could justly be named the “Memorial Flower” since it is the principal flower used for the decoration of graves on Memorial Day. Many persons grow peonies principally for this purpose and numerous large commercial growers ship thousands of the flowers for Memorial Day use.
